The New Albany-Floyd County school board approved layoffs of 38 teachers, numbers not as high as first projected to help stave off a multi-million dollar budget deficit.

The board’s overall decision cuts 69 positions, but with attrition and other moves, 38 teachers will lose their jobs after June 30. The teachers’ union president, Mark Kessans, said most of those laid off are music, art and physical education teachers. There was no immediate confirmation if any administrative positions were cut.

The district is facing at least a $2 million budget shortfall because of repeated reductions in state funding.
