The Anchor Bay School District sent 30 layoff notices to instructional staff members last week in response to the $8 million shortfall they were facing.

At a June 29 school board meeting, the trustees unanimously voted to pass a balanced budget for the 2011-12 school year after approving millions of dollars in employee concessions, a school merger, a change in the kindergarten program and several layoffs. At the time it was estimated there would be about 35 employees laid off, and it is in the teacher contracts that those employees had to be notified by July 8.
