Up to 40 employees at FLIR, the Wilsonville-based manufacturer of high-technology thermal imaging and night vision equipment, will lose their jobs because of a reduction in military orders and concerns over the federal budget.

Berne plant to lay off 175 workers

Ficosa North America will lay off 175 workers at its plant in Berne. The company is consolidating production at other facilities.

A spokesperson said Ficosa expects to begin transferring production to other plants in September and be done in November. The layoffs will last six months or more as the Berne plant is prepared for other production work.


Nokia crash causes RF Micro layoffs 80

RF Micro Devices will cut about 80 people from its worldwide work force, with most of the impact hitting in Greensboro, we heard this afternoon from Jerry Neal, the company’s executive vice president. They had employed around 1,450 people locally.


Bank of America to cut 59 jobs in Fort Lauderdale

Bank of America filed notice with Florida that it intends to lay off 59 employees in Fort Lauderdale.

The layoffs will take place at the bank’s office at 1425 N.W. 62nd St. (Cypress Creek Road) from Nov. 1 through Jan. 31.


RIM “Streamlining” Operations, Lays Off 2,000

NBA’s Lakers cut loose 20 staff

NBA glamour club the Los Angeles Lakers have laid off about 20 employees including a longtime assistant general manager and five scouting staff.

Assistant general manager Ronnie Lester and scout Gene Tormohlen, who put in 43 years with the club, are part of the group of employees who were told they were being laid off or that their contracts would not be renewed.

Budget cuts and financial uncertainty have led to pink slips at Johnstown’s National Drug Intelligence Center.

Thirty-six employees learned that they will lose their jobs Sept. 23 due to “reductions to the NDIC’s budget,” the U.S. Justice Department said.

Chicago Tribune lays off 20 employees

The Chicago Tribune is cutting 20 employees from its pay roll — and many of them are from the Tribune’s newsroom staff.

The newspaper reported that the layoffs hit writers, editors and support staff. The Tribune Company declined to comment in depth on the layoffs, releasing this statement: “We constantly evaluate our resources and staffing based on our strategic goals and the business environment. We do not comment on internal personnel matters.”
