Center Grove wants to warn teachers about possible 21 layoffs

The Daily Journal reports that school officials plan to ask the board to approve sending the layoff notices as a precaution. If those jobs were cut, the district would save about $1 million. Last year, voters denied a referendum to raise property taxes to make up for a decrease in state funding.
Since that time, administrators have proposed cutting employee pay by 2%, cutting some supporting staff positions, and requiring students to pay to play sports. That would cut $1.1 million out of the budget. But the district needs to cut $1.6 million total.
Center Grove Schools Chief Financial Officer Paul Gabriel told the Daily Journal that the notices do not necessarily mean teachers or administrators will lose their jobs. “If there’s the potential for a layoff, I think they’d like to know,” he said.
