When asked if Japan’s March 11 earthquake and tsunami played a part in the 40 layoffs, Hemlock Semiconductor Group spokeswoman Leslie Orozco told the Saginaw News, “Some of it is just for efficiency purposes — it’s not just because of the incident in Japan; there are several reasons.”
The plant, which supplies polysilicon to the solar industry, employs about 1,000 people directly with Hemlock Semiconductor Group and more than 1,000 contractors.
