Hundreds of jobs were said to be on the line at Diamond Aircraft in London if a $35-million federal loan didn’t come through — the money hasn’t come through and the jobs started to disappear Monday.

After months of waiting for the loan to manufacture its new D-Jet, Diamond Aircraft president Peter Maurer announced he’s suspending the program and laying off 213 employees — more than half the staff at the plant.

There are still about 200 employees at Diamond producing propeller aircraft, but Maurer warned the plant’s future could be at risk.

Diamond has 240 orders for the innovative personal jet and has lined up $55 million in provincial and private investment.

But no D-Jets have been produced at the Crumlin Rd. plant, pending approval of the federal loan.
