Genzyme Genetics reported to lay off 169

Genzyme Genetics, the genetics testing business sold by Genzyme in September to Laboratory Corporation of America, has announced layoffs of 169 employees, including staff at its Westborough location.

Genzyme Genetics SVP and General Manager Jon Hart has not yet returned a phone call to confirm the news. The Worcester Business Journal cited an internal company memo that it obtained announcing the layoffs.

According to the memo, multiple waves of layoffs will occur for Genzyme Genetics, with a first wave of information technology layoffs occurring for 12 employees on May 20 and a about 53 reimbursement workers losing their jobs at the end of July. Another 11 IT employees will no longer be employed by Genzyme Genetics as of Sept. 16, with 93 reimbursement employees losing their jobs on Feb. 29, 2012.
