Grandville to cut five teaching jobs

The school board approved the layoffs this week in advance of a June 20 hearing on a 2011-12 budget plan. Aside from the job cuts, the district plans to cover most of a projected $3.2 million deficit with cash from its general fund reserve.
Caniff said 35 Grandville staff retired last year, and 17 were replaced. Now, five of those jobs will be eliminated.
Grandville’s enrollment will fall about 100 students to an estimated 5,733 this fall, and dip nearer to 5,700 next year. The district had more than 6,000 students four years ago.
