The California based technology company is required through the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act to notify the state of the planned furloughs by letter.
A company spokeswoman said the layoffs are necessary because Hewlett-Packard lost a contract, but she would not specify with whom.
Layoffs will begin May 31 and will continue over a two-week period. Spokeswoman Jane McMillian said furloughed employees have 60 to 90 days to apply for internal jobs elsewhere.
The East Pennsboro branch has 500 to 600 employees, McMillian said. Worldwide, Hewlett-Packard employs 302,000 people, she said.
