Lamers Bus Lines plans to lay off of 212 employees in its Milwaukee-area operations beginning at the start of the 2011-2012 school year.

The decision stems from the company losing a large portion of its contract with Milwaukee Public Schools.

“After nearly 30 years of providing busing service to MPS, the contract was awarded to another carrier,” the company stated in a mass layoff notice filed late Thursday with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

The Green Bay-based bus company said 150 employees at its Milwaukee facility, 1122 W. Bolden Court, and 62 employees at its Butler site, 12800 W. Custer Ave., will be affected by the decision.

The majority of the affected workers are part-time drivers and monitors who may be hired by the new contract holder, according to Lamers.
