Nurses mostly were spared in the layoff that cost 133 people at Lakeland Regional Medical Center their jobs Thursday, but the impact was felt by employees hospitalwide, including some who had been with LRMC more than 25 years.

In addition to laying off 133 people, the hospital also cut 144 vacant positions, hospital officials said. The combination of layoffs and unfilled positions results in 277 jobs being eliminated.

LRMC had 4,636 employees. The 133 layoffs, 3 percent of those employees, will result in a workforce of about 4,500, LRMC President Elaine Thompson said
