The board of trustees of the Marshall, Texas, Independent School District meets Monday evening to vote on employee layoffs that school system officials say are necessary because of decreased revenue.

Layoffs will include the school system’s central office, teachers and staff.

School system officials have warned that 100 or more teachers could be laid off.

The school district has nearly 1,000 employees with an average salary of $50,000 plus benefits.

Officials said they have to make approximately $6 million in cuts to compensate for reduced funding from the state.

Deputy schools Superintendent Melinda Jones has said that school programs will be cut — but 80 percent of the budget is personnel.
