MGM Resorts International said it is closing one of two hotel towers at its Gold Strike casino in Jean and has laid off 64 employees there because of declining business.

“Even though we’re seeing a return in business in Las Vegas we’re not seeing it in Jean,”.

The property is closing a 500-room tower while a second tower with 300 rooms will remain open. The casino’s coffee shop will close, and a steakhouse will become a cheaper, more casual restaurant.

The Gold Strike is also removing about a third of its slot machines, leaving about 450 slots. Table games will be open for play from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. and closed during the graveyard shift.

MGM will help place laid-off employees in other jobs at the company.

Gold Strike is the only remaining casino in Jean after Nevada Landing, which stood across the highway, was torn down . MGM closed Nevada Landing to make way for a master-planned development that failed to materialize in the downturn.
