More than 1,000 Orange County teachers, school psychologists, nurses and support staff are being identified by districts as facing potential job losses this summer.

The names, titles and work sites, provided to the Register in response to a public records request, represent most of the 1,495 full-time positions now targeted for trims as districts grapple with yet another year of budget tightening.

That figure has risen since districts first shared details of their cuts in mid-March.

In California, local schools must prepare plans for cutting certificated staff – teachers, nurses, psychologists, reading specialists and most administrators – by March 15, well in advance of when the state adopts a budget to fund them. Classified staff – secretaries, janitors, groundskeepers – must be informed by May 15. Temporary employees typically work under one-year contracts and can be released without the same notification.

For many, the reductions listed represent a worst-case scenario – their plans should Gov. Jerry Brown’s push for tax extensions fail and he returns to seek deeper cuts from K-12 education.
