NBA glamour club the Los Angeles Lakers have laid off about 20 employees including a longtime assistant general manager and five scouting staff.
Assistant general manager Ronnie Lester and scout Gene Tormohlen, who put in 43 years with the club, are part of the group of employees who were told they were being laid off or that their contracts would not be renewed.

Research in Motion (RIM) has announced that it is cutting off 2,000 jobs to cope up with on going recession.
All impacted employees will receive severance packages and outplacement support.

Budget cuts and financial uncertainty have led to pink slips at Johnstown’s National Drug Intelligence Center.
Thirty-six employees learned that they will lose their jobs Sept. 23 due to “reductions to the NDIC’s budget,” the U.S. Justice Department said.

The Central Minnesota Chapter of the American Red Cross will lose two full-time employees at its office soon as part of a major restructuring by the national organization.

The Chicago Tribune is cutting 20 employees from its pay roll — and many of them are from the Tribune’s newsroom staff.
The newspaper reported that the layoffs hit writers, editors and support staff. The Tribune Company declined to comment in depth on the layoffs, releasing this statement: “We constantly evaluate our resources and staffing based on our strategic goals and the business environment. We do not comment on internal personnel matters.”

n estimated 2,000 NASA workers were laid off one day after space shuttle Atlantis landed ending the program.
The news was expected, but will devastate the Space Coast economy, from housing to employment. It’s an region where the space industry is connected to all parts; the area code here is 3-2-1, a nod to the famous countdown clock.

It has been described as a cliff, a deep drastic cut in education spending. Administrators have known, for at least two years, without significant economic recovery they would be forced to do more than ever — meeting new state and federal requirements — with fewer resources.

The long-standing financial woes of Lee Enterprises trickled down to the Arizona Daily Star, and in a big way. The Star laid off about 20 people morning, in the process gutting its marketing department and taking a major swath to the news department.
