Layoffs issued for 54 Jefferson Parish public school teachers

The recent wave of budget cuts in Jefferson Parish public schools is hitting teachers’ mailboxes as administrators issue layoff notices to 54 educators.

A School Board decision in June to save $2.3 million by raising the allocation of students per teacher in middle and high schools, along with other items on a list of more than 100 budget cuts totaling about $20 million, triggered the layoffs, said school system spokeswoman Beth Branley.


40 face layoffs in Knott County

At least 40 Knott County employees are not expected to have jobs. This comes after a drop in revenue that supplied funds for most county programs.

The majority of the magistrates did not agree, they needed two votes, and only one magistrate voted yes to the tax.

Bridgeport company laying off 160

DRS Power Solutions in Bridgeport has notified the state Department of Labor that they plan to eliminate 160 jobs.

The layoffs are scheduled to begin in 60-90 days. The employees will be given a severance plus job placement assistance.


Medicaid cuts prompt Valley Baptist to lay off 44 workers

Cuts to the state’s Medicaid program have prompted Valley Baptist Medical Center to lay off 44 workers.

The Harlingen-based hospital system reported the layoffs in a statement issued Thursday.

In the statement, President & CEO James Eastham said Medicaid inpatient reimbursements have been reduced for all Texas hospitals.

Revenue and net income rose in its fiscal first quarter, but the company plans to cut up to 500 jobs, the Islandia-based software company announced after the stock markets closed.


Stimson to lay off up to 35 workers from Tillamook mill

High demand for logs in China is forcing Stimson Lumber, Co., to reduce its workforce at its mills in Oregon, says company CEO Andrew Miller.

Stimson announced last week it will shed 45 or 50 jobs at its Hagg Lake mill. The company announced cuts of 30 to 35 at its Tillamook mill.


Baystate eliminating 354 jobs

Baystate Health is laying off more than 150 workers, and leaving more than 180 more positions unfilled, the company announced.

According to a statement sent to 22News by Baystate spokesperson, Jane Albert, Baystate will eliminate the positions of 169 managers and staff. An additional 185 vacant positions will be left unfilled.


UTMB to cut jobs; 130 given notice

The University of Texas Medical Branch told employees Tuesday that it will cut about 120 jobs and an additional 130 positions in its program to provide care to state prisoners.

The job cuts were a direct response to state budget cuts. The Legislature cut funding to the medical branch by $114 million in the next two years.
