Hornell, N.Y. —Saying he hasn’t seen the same problem in 28 years, A.L. Blades & Sons General Manager Jim McGee confirmed the company laid off 68 seasonal employees last week.


Marshall schools cut 11 jobs

The Marshall Public Schools Board of Education Monday unanimously voted to send out layoff notices to 11 employees.

The measure was one of a series of emergency fixes meant to deal with a $2.4 million budget deficit. The level of layoffs this year is significant, said district Director of Business Operations Scott Blankinship.


Sequoia Union High School District Approves 33 Job Cuts

The Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved $5.03 million worth of budget reductions, and eliminated 33 full time jobs.

Though not all of positions were filled, the school board meeting in Redwood City that 32 district employees would be laid off as a result of the cuts.

Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital officials eliminated seven management positions.

It is a move that saved HGB an estimated $350,000 and that they say will position the Charlotte hospital for the future, according to Carrie Rathbun Hawks, director of the Charlotte hospital’s marketing communications.


MGM closes tower at Gold Strike casino in Jean, lays off 64 workers

MGM Resorts International said it is closing one of two hotel towers at its Gold Strike casino in Jean and has laid off 64 employees there because of declining business.

“Even though we’re seeing a return in business in Las Vegas we’re not seeing it in Jean,”.

The Reynolds School District will lay off dozens of special education assistants and other instructional assistants, a district spokeswoman confirmed.

A teary-eyed school board laid off 72 teachers, counselors and nurses, saying there was no other way to keep the district solvent.

But the 5-2 vote was not popular with the crowd, which spilled outside because there wasn’t enough room in the Colton Joint Unified school board room.
