Nationwide Insurance has eliminated 90 jobs in Portland, dramatically shrinking its local workforce from what it was three years ago.
Workers at the company’s northeast Portland offices were notified of the layoffs late last week. Giannetti said they affect sales people who dealt with customers who contacted the company by phone or through the Internet.

The work force at a southeast Arkansas arsenal where a chemical weapons stockpile has been steadily declining will be reduced beginning this weekend.
According to a statement, 79 positions will be eliminated, but attrition and transition efforts will mean that less than 14 workers will be laid off.

Alere Home Monitoring, which offers medical diagnostic-test services, is moving most of its Orlando operations to its headquarters in Livermore, Calif., resulting in layoffs for 106 local workers as of Aug. 5.
Alere Home Monitoring was formed in 2010 by the merger of Tapestry Medical and Quality Assured Services Inc.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania will eliminate 52 positions – most through attrition but 10 through furloughs – to help the state university reduce a $7.75 million budget deficit in the 2011-12 fiscal year.

The newly appointed public schools chief in Ohio is telling staff at the state’s education department that he has to eliminate at least 26 positions at the agency by the month’s end because of budget cuts.
Stan Heffner told employees that the department’s operating funds have been cut by $6.3 million, or about 12.6 percent.

State budget cuts spared a popular tourist attraction in El Paso, but several local employees in the state’s parks system were not as fortunate.
Eight El Paso-based employees of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department lost their jobs this week after state lawmakers approved a $172 billion two-year budget, which cuts $15 billion in current spending. Under the budget cuts, Texas Parks and Wildlife will receive about $150 million less over the next two years.

Nationwide Insurance has announced plans to lay off 64 employees in its Amarillo call center, a company spokesman confirmed.
The employees scheduled for layoffs comprise about one-sixth of Nationwide’s workforce in Amarillo. The company will retain 325 employees, all of whom provide customer service for exisiting policyholders. The 64 jobs being eliminated are sales positions, which process incoming phone calls as well as online applications from potential policyholders.

A second round of teacher layoffs has put 47 Memphis City Schools educators out of work.
Most of those laid off are English, history, social studies or vocational teachers, according to The Commercial Appeal.
More than 250 employees have been laid off this summer by the city school system. Also let go were 95 vocational instructors and 127 managers and clerical workers.

Richmond University Medical Center will lay off 60 workers, including up to 20 nurses and will also furlough other employees to stave off a potential $6 million budget shortfall.
The layoffs, announced today, will become effective Aug. 1; however, administrators stressed that patient services won’t be slashed.
