Officials for the Parkland School District told 69 News that they have to cut about 60 positions. The cuts were announced at a budget seminar held Friday.
Of the cuts, 16 are coming from teacher and administration resignations. The remaining 42 position cuts will come from layoffs of members of the district’s support staff.
The district is also changing programs to save money. One program on the chopping block is the districts behind-the-wheel driver’s ed course. By contracting the program out to the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit, the district will save nearly $500,000.
Officials said Parkland School District is trying to cut a $6.4 million budget gap. The cuts to staff will save the district more than $2 million.
The district lost roughly $1.9 million in state money in the governor’s budget. They also lost $4 million in property reassessment appeals and another $2 million in stimulus money.
