During a special-called meeting Monday, the Round Rock ISD school board voted to lay off 242 employees.

The employees, all on probationary contracts, included classroom teachers, counselors, nurses, librarians and administrators. At this time, the district has not released figures of how many employees were eliminated in each category.

The layoffs were meant to offset anticipated cuts to state public school funding. RRISD officials expect to receive $60 million less in state funding for the 2011–12 school year.

RRISD spokeswoman JoyLynn Occhiuzzi said officials have also identified about 70 central office and auxiliary employees who will be laid off, and that number is likely to increase. RRISD officials have until June 31 to notify those employees, she said.
