S. Fla. water managers consider 40 percent cuts, 91 layoffs

The ongoing turmoil at the South Florida Water Management District shifted from scandal to layoffs as proposed budget cuts would eliminate 91 positions and make deep cuts including office supplies and Everglades restoration programs.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the hiring of Bob Howard as an auditor for the district’s inspector general, after The Palm Beach Post reported that Howard and the district’s executive director, Carol Wehle, did not disclose they were in a relationship before he was hired.
