Safe Auto Insurance cuts 47 jobs from its call centers
Safe Auto Insurance Co. is cutting dozens of employees, largely from its calls centers, as it trims costs to adjust to weaker sales and changing customer habits.
The Columbus-based insurer, one of Central Ohio’s largest family-owned businesses, said in a statement that it recently eliminated 47 jobs from offices in Columbus and Woodsfield, Ohio; Hemingway, S.C.; and Somerset, Ky.
Safe Auto has about 1,000 employees, including nearly 700 in Central Ohio.
Spokeswoman Grace Wilson said eight of the jobs cut were in Columbus, but didn’t immediately have details on the kind of the jobs shed here.
“Most of the job cuts were at our call centers,” she said.
April Miller, Safe Auto’s senior vice president of human resources, said some customers have cut back on insurance or gone without it because of the rough economy. Call volume also has been dropping as customers use the Internet to communicate with the insurer.
The privately held company reported $341.5 million in 2009 revenue, up 6 percent from $321 million in 2008.
