Salinas City Elementary School District board members voted unanimously this week to lay off more than two dozen employees in the migrant and preschool programs following cuts in the funding provided by the state.

The trustees approved issuing the layoff notices, a decision that will eliminate 32 classified positions for the 2011-12 academic year. Classified workers are staff such as custodians and clerks — no teachers are targeted for layoffs.
