A plastic bottle recycling plant in Spartanburg is laying off 50 workers as it restructures operations.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported the employees at NURRC have been laid off.

The plant is partly owned by the Coca-Cola Co. and UURC of Spartanburg. The plant had opened in 2007 and had about 100 employees.

The company cited increased costs for one type of recycling in explaining the layoffs. The company says its other recycling operation is continuing.

URRC vice president Gerry Fishbeck says the company hopes to recall the workers after it installs new equipment to improve operations.

Coca-Cola issued a statement saying it still is committed to recycling its packaging.
