StaplesStaples Inc. notified 140 employees that their jobs would be eliminated in 60 days.

The notice on Thursday follows the office supply company’s Tuesday announcement that its third-quarter net income fell 43 percent.

“Like a lot of companies, we have been having to make some difficult decisions to remain competitive in the current economic environment,” spokesman Paul Capelli said.

The job cuts affected various offices but did not include store employees. About half of the layoffs are at Staples’ Framingham headquarters. The company employs 96,000.
