The British Broadcasting Corp (BBC), the world’s biggest public broadcaster, plans to cut 2,000 jobs and move offices and production outside of London as part of an effort to reduce costs after its funding was frozen.

The British Broadcasting Corp. could cut 3,000 staff over the next five years to cut costs amid a freeze in the U.K. licence fee, the Sunday Times reports without citing any sources.

The report said the BBC will submit a 20% budget reduction plan to the BBC Trust in the autumn that will see a sharp cut in its 17,000-strong permanent workforce.


Queen Alexandra Hospital cuts 700 jobs

A £256m Hampshire hospital which opened 18 months ago has cut 700 jobs and shut wards, the BBC has learned.

The Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham was rebuilt using private finance and opened in July 2009.

The hospital, run by Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, confirmed the job losses and the closure of 100 beds.

Some of the 60 jobs due to be axed in the Arabic section of the BBC World Service may be saved, director Peter Horrocks said yesterday.

Horrocks told the Foreign Affairs Select Committee yesterday that the Arabic-speaking journalists had done a “fantastic job” in reporting the uprisings in the Arab world. “We maybe able to alter some of these job losses,” he said.
