Cuts to the state’s Medicaid program have prompted Valley Baptist Medical Center to lay off 44 workers.
The Harlingen-based hospital system reported the layoffs in a statement issued Thursday.
In the statement, President & CEO James Eastham said Medicaid inpatient reimbursements have been reduced for all Texas hospitals.

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs submitted her first budget as mayor and proposed a $3.2 billion budget, which is 5 percent less than this year’s budget.
The budget suggests eliminating 60 positions, which would mean as many as 27 people could be laid off. The last time Orange County laid off an employee was in 2007.

To close a $72 million budget gap for the next fiscal year, the county is considering eliminating 289 positions, approximately 130 of which are filled.
County Chief Executive Officer Chandra Wallar said the layoffs are coming from every department. However these numbers are determined by the department heads and won’t be final until the supervisors start the budget hearings in June

By a 3-1 vote, the school board late Tuesday night approved sending final layoff notices to 129 educators and counselors, a move board members said was necessary to keep the school district solvent.

Layoff notices went out Monday to 31 city workers in Oceanside as city officials struggle to cope with a projected $3.6 million budget deficit for the coming fiscal year.
The layoffs will hit most city departments except public safety, with libraries, public works, neighborhood services, financial services, human resources and the city manager’s office among those affected

Hercules on Friday issued pink slips to 25 employees in a first round of layoffs that officials say eventually could involve as much as 40 percent of the city’s workforce.
Interim City Manager Fred Deltorchio announced the issuance of the layoff notices in his weekly city manager’s report. The list of affected positions will be published in next week’s city manager’s report, he said.

The Pleasanton Unified School District now has the authorization to layoff 24 full-time-equivalent classified positions.
The approval came with a 5-0 vote at Tuesday night’s board of trustees meeting.
Each position affected was funded by categorical funds, one-time donations or Individual Education Plan (IEP) claims, which are for students in special-education programs.

For the second time in less than four months, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, one of the area’s largest employers, announced layoffs.
Dropping revenues could cost 200 workers their jobs, officials said. The hospital’s largest union fired back at the news, claiming the hospital was merely crying poor and pointing to the pay of its CEO, one of the highest compensated public hospital officials in the state.
