Union Bank to lay off 72 in Everett

Union Bank is laying off 72 employees starting March 31, according to the Employment Security Department of Washington state.

The San Francisco bank is cutting the jobs in its Everett locations.

I’ve put in a call to the bank and will update this post when I learn more about the layoffs.

Orange County’s school districts plan to slash at least $129 million in spending and 1,429 jobs next year if the state can’t avoid $2.3 billion in new cuts.


Palm Springs Unified School District layoffs 90 teachers

About 90 teaching positions were eliminated in Palm Springs Unified School District, the school board decided Tuesday.

Board members voted unanimously to start the layoff process, which included 60 K-6 teachers, eight intervention teachers, 15 high school and middle school teachers, seven preschool teachers, four counselors, two psychologists, and one high school dean.


Costa Mesa City Council approved 150 layoffs

The Costa Mesa City Council approved issuing more than 150 layoff notices to city employees.

“This has been coming on for a long time, and we’re coming to a point that’s rock bottom,” Mayor Gary Monahan told the audience, mostly city employees who could face layoffs in six months with the council’s approval.


West Contra Costa Unified School to cut 138 positions

The West Contra Costa Unified School District board has voted to eliminate the equivalent of 138.6 teaching and other credentialed positions for the 2011-12 school year.

The move means that current class maximums at the elementary schools will be retained. They are: 24 at kindergarten, 20 at first and second, 28 at third, and 33 for fourth through sixth grades.

A rash of bank robberies in New York has the city’s police commissioner worried that criminals have turned banks into “virtual cash machines” and some wondering whether tough economic times are fueling the trend.

On Monday alone, robbers targeted five banks in the Big Apple, some striking in broad daylight and near famous landmarks.
