Stamford school district lays off 12 teachers

The city school district laid off 12 classroom teachers, in what the teachers’ union president said is the biggest round of layoffs in decades.

In 1982, the Board of Education’s budget was cut by $3.4 million, forcing the board to close Rippowam High School.


NY courts order 367 layoffs in budget cuts

New York’s court system will lay off 367 employees statewide as of June 1.

The cuts affect court clerks and assistants, court officers of all ranks, analysts, librarians, aides, stenographers, family counseling case analysts, court reporters and attorneys and other support staff. No judges lost their jobs.


Yonkers cuts include 700 layoffs

In an effort to close an $87 million budget gap, Superintendent Bernard P. Pierorazio has proposed deep spending cuts including over 700 layoffs and elimination of funding for interscholastic sports and extracurricular activities.

Staff cuts include 232 bus monitors, 86 pre-K teachers and 68 school aides, 55 kindergarten teachers and the layoffs of 199 certified and 68 noncertified staffers in other programs.


Soap Opera Cancellations Lead to 70 Layoffs

Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly are expected to drastically trim their staffs, the New York Post’s Keith Kelly reports. As many as half of the 70 employees in the New York office will be laid off.

Publisher Source Interlink is turning the magazines’ operations over to National Enquirer and American Media Inc. in a licensing deal.

Wappingers budget proposal cuts 35 positions

The Wappingers Central School District Board of Education is expected to adopt its $188.7 million budget for the 2011-12 school year next week.

The budget would eliminate about 35 district positions, roughly 30 via attrition, Parla said. Cuts include technology staff, library clerks and elementary-school teachers as well as teaching assistants and one period of musical instruction for fourth- through sixth-graders. The budget reduces BOCES services and money for supplies


Cisco cutting 550 jobs, closing down Flip business

Cisco Systems Inc said Tuesday it would cut 550 jobs as part of a plan to exit aspects of its consumer business. The San Jose, Calif., technology firm said it will close down its Flip business and support FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan.

A rash of bank robberies in New York has the city’s police commissioner worried that criminals have turned banks into “virtual cash machines” and some wondering whether tough economic times are fueling the trend.

On Monday alone, robbers targeted five banks in the Big Apple, some striking in broad daylight and near famous landmarks.
