Lorain County Children Services will lay off about 15 workers in the coming weeks to deal with losing about $1.2 million in federal funding.

Patti-Jo Burtnett, the agency’s spokeswoman, said the cuts will mean reductions in alcohol and drug assessments and psychiatric services. There also could be some reductions in other support services.


Cleveland mayor announces 350-400 layoffs

During a meeting , Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson announced there will be hundreds of layoffs throughout the city.

“It’s gonna be difficult, people are going to be mad,” said Jackson. “But we will cure this state imposed deficit.”

Fostoria school board voted Monday, in front of a packed house, to cut 38 district staff positions to overcome a $1.6 million deficit projected for the end of next school year.

The board voted 5-0 to eliminate the positions of alternative school administrator, assistant high school principal, hearing officer, administrative coach, assistant treasurer, central office receptionist, two building secretaries and 28 certified teaching positions.


Ohio parts supplier lays off 130 workers as Honda slows production after earthquake in Japan

A northern Ohio company that makes exhaust systems and other parts for Honda vehicles is laying off about 130 full-time employees.

The Mansfield News Journal reports the workers were laid off Monday by Newman Technology Inc.

As many as 30 employees in the Stark County Department of Job and Family Services could be laid off later this year due to cuts in state funding.

The cuts will affect how quickly the agency can process Stark County residents’ payments for child support, and food and emergency help. Nearly one in six Stark County residents get food assistance from the agency.

A union official says a steel galvanizing plant in western Pennsylvania is laying off 50 employees, likely for months, because of slumping sales.

Officials at Sharon Coating Co. referred calls to a sister company on Friday, where an official did not immediately return calls for comment.
