Nationwide Insurance lays off 90 in northeast Portland, continuing downsizing

Nationwide Insurance has eliminated 90 jobs in Portland, dramatically shrinking its local workforce from what it was three years ago.

Workers at the company’s northeast Portland offices were notified of the layoffs late last week. Giannetti said they affect sales people who dealt with customers who contacted the company by phone or through the Internet.


Portland Opera cuts 42 jobs

Portland Opera has cut the equivalent of seven full-time positions from its staff of 42 because it expects revenue will not match expenses next season. The reductions affect all areas of the company — administrative, marketing, development, production and artistic positions. The layoffs occurred by eliminating some positions, switching positions from fulltime to seasonal and reducing full-time to part-time jobs.


Kaplan unit to lay off 88 workers in Hollywood

Kaplan Virtual Education, a subsidiary of Kaplan Inc., said Wednesday it is closing its Hollywood office. The company posted a WARN notice that it plans to lay off 88 employees at its online education business for high schools.


Portland Development Commission layoffs affect 17

Seventeen employees at Portland’s urban renewal agency received layoff notices this morning.

The staff reductions, which, including vacant positions total 22.2 full-time slots, would go into effect May 17. The cuts account for $2.3 million in annual salary and benefits.
