Texas Prison System to cut 500 jobs

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Institutional Division has been directed to cut 550 jobs in response to the state’s $15 billion budget shortfall.

Almost 4,000 people work in TDCJ-ID Region 6, which is made up of units in Marlin and Gatesville.

A rash of bank robberies in New York has the city’s police commissioner worried that criminals have turned banks into “virtual cash machines” and some wondering whether tough economic times are fueling the trend.

On Monday alone, robbers targeted five banks in the Big Apple, some striking in broad daylight and near famous landmarks.


Midway Games to cut 180 jobs, 25 percent of work force, close Texas studio

Midway Games Inc., maker of the popular “Mortal Kombat” video game series, will cut its head count by 180 people, or 25 percent of its work force, close a studio in Austin, Texas, and halt development of “noncore” games, according to a government filing Tuesday.
