The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis plans to cut 200 jobs early next year, according to a state regulatory filing made public Monday.

A spokeswoman for the university blamed state budget reductions.

The job cuts will start Jan. 7, according to a letter from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development that went to U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen and other elected officials. The state agency said it received the news on Wednesday.

Details of who would be cut weren’t immediately available. UT spokeswoman Dena Owens said the number of jobs cut hadn’t been determined yet.

“Because of the budget situation, University of Tennessee Health Science Center does anticipate some reduction in force at the beginning of the year,” Owens said.

The cuts could have a major affect on health care businesses throughout the region, which depend on UT to train doctors, nurses, dentists and a wide range of other health care workers.
