UTPA to lay off 26 staff members, no faculty

The University of Texas-Pan American will deliver pink slips to 26 staff members this week due to a staggering $17.3 million in state budget cuts, President Robert Nelsen announced Tuesday.

An earlier worst-case scenario would have called for layoffs as large as 154 staff and faculty members. But as UTPA’s total cut fell from nearly 25 percent to 17.8 percent, so too did the termination number, which ended up sparing all instructors from the unemployment line.
